Reactors
Reactors are industrial vessels used to carry out a chemical reaction. Additionally, they are sometimes used as general mixing tanks. These machines are usually designed as sealed vessels equipped with some form of agitation and some mode of heat transfer to maintain temperature. When choosing a reactor, it is important to consider pressure rating, temperature rating, heating/cooling capacity, and size needed to optimize the reaction. Chemical Reactor
There are many different types of chemical reactors including batch reactors, continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTR), and plug flow reactors (PFR). Batch reactors are vessels that do not reach a steady state, and are primarily employed for relatively slow reactions of several hours duration. CSTR’s are usually used when greater production rates are desired with relatively short reaction time, when uniform temperature is desired, and when labor costs are high. In a plug flow reactor (PFR), all components of the feed mixture have the same residence time which means there is no mixing in the axial direction but complete mixing in the radial direction. A PFR has a higher theoretical efficiency than a CSTR of the same volume. This means a reaction will usually proceed to a higher percentage of completion in a PFR than in a CSTR.
Bioreactor
Bioreactors are machines designed to support a biologically active environment, so they are usually designed with smooth edges and a polished finish for efficient cleaning. Bioreactors are often cylindrical in shape and constructed of stainless steel. Bioreactors have several associated activities which include gas/liquid contacting, on-line sensing of concentrations, mixing, heat transfer, foam control, and feed of nutrients or reagents such as those for pH control.
